RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito da modificação térmica em diferentes tempos e temperaturas na resistência mecânica da madeira de espécies provenientes de um sistema agroflorestal. Para tanto, foram avaliados três indivíduos de Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan, Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub., Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla e Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake, todos com nove anos de idade. Após o dimensionamento, as amostras passaram pelo processo de modificação térmica durante 2h e 4h realizado em estufa nas temperaturas de 120 °C, 150 °C, 180 °C e 210 °C, além da testemunha. Para avaliação da resistência mecânica, seguiu-se a norma técnica ASTM D 143-94, obtendo-se os valores de módulos de elasticidade e ruptura, tensão no limite proporcional e força máxima. Observou-se que os diferentes tempos e temperaturas alteram a resistência mecânica das quatro espécies estudadas. O tempo de 2 h de permanência é o mais recomendado para a realização da modificação térmica. O procedimento modifica a resistência mecânica da madeira de uma forma positiva, sendo que as temperaturas de exposição que variaram entre 120 °C e 180 ºC são as mais recomendadas. A modificação térmica realizada pelo período de 4 h não é recomendada para fins estruturais, pelo fato do decréscimo da resistência à flexão.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effects of thermal modification at different temperatures and for different durations on the mechanical strength of wood of selected species from an agroforestry system. To this end, three 9-year-old (approximate age) individuals, each from four species of forest trees-Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan, Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub., Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla hybrid, and Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake-were evaluated. After obtaining initial measurements, samples from the four species under went heat treatment for 2 h and 4 h and were subsequently subjected to heat using an oven at temperatures 120°C, 150°C, 180°C, and 210°C; respectively, in addition to the control. For evaluating mechanical strength, the technical standard ASTM D 143-94 was used to obtain the values of the moduli of elasticity and rupture, tension at the proportional limit, and maximum force of the subjects. It was observed that different durations and temperatures altered the mechanical strength of the wood of the four species studied. The 2 h residence time is the most recommended for conducting thermal modification. This procedure modifies the mechanical resistance of wood in a positive manner, with exposure temperatures ranging between 120 ºC and 180 ºC being the most recommended. The thermal treatment carried out for 4 h is not recommended for structural purposes because of the decrease in flexural strength.

Abstract: Particleboard can be produced from a mixture of different lignocellulosic materials, which can be chosen depending on the density required for the panel and its applications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of particleboard with bamboo, pine and mate for a new product of high density for the special applications currently served by HDF. Particles of bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea) finely chopped sticks of mate (Ilex paraguariensis) and commercial particles of southern pine (Pinus taeda) wood were used. These particles used 100 % by weight in the panel or in mixtures of 50 % each (three mixtures) or in a triple mixture of one third each, were glued in a drum-type rotary mixer with melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin, and pressed in hydraulic press at 120 °C and 5,88 MPa for 10 minutes, up to 6 mm thickness. The panels were produced with 900 kg/m3 nominal density and, after pressing, were conditioned at 20 ºC and 65 % relative humidity. Statistical was performed by means the variance analysis and simplex centroid experimental design, with three replicates. It was found the use of pine particles contributed mainly to increase the panel's strength and stiffness, while the use of mate particles facilitated internal bond strength. The mixtures modeling showed that the water absorption, the strength and stiffness in bending and the internal bond strength are explained by the cubic model, while the thickness swelling and hardness are explained by the quadratic model. The best physical and mechanical properties results were found for the pine, bamboo and mate same ratio mixture.

RESUMO A madeira é um material renovável, considerado ecologicamente correto e utilizado para diversos fins. Embora a madeira tratada com arseniato de cobre cromado (CCA) não se deteriore facilmente, seu descarte final pode acarretar riscos devido à concentração e toxicidade dos componentes. A remoção do CCA da madeira pode ser realizada de diferentes maneiras. Este estudo teve como foco a redução das concentrações de espécies químicas Cu, Cr e As pela técnica de eletro-remoção, visando obter uma biomassa com baixo potencial deletério que permitiria múltiplos usos ou disposição final segura em aterros sanitários. Os resultados analíticos mostraram reduções de 79,5; 87,4 e 81,3% nas concentrações médias de Cu, Cr e As, respectivamente. Vale ressaltar a ocorrência do fungo Xylaria sp. após o tratamento 6 (60 min, 5 g e 25 V), sugerindo ainda que o método foi eficaz. Amostras desses fungos foram identificadas dos isolados por meio de cultura em meio, extração de DNA e sequenciamento da região do espaçador transcrito interno (ITS).

ABSTRACT Wood is a renewable material considered eco-friendly and used for various purposes. While wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) does not deteriorate, its final disposal may entail risks due to the concentration and toxicity of the components. The removal of CCA from wood can be achieved in different ways. This study focuses on the reduction of the concentrations of Cu, Cr, and As chemical species by the electro-removal technique, aiming to obtain biomass with low deleterious potential that would allow multiple uses or safe disposal in landfills. The analytical results showed reductions of 79.5, 87.4, and 81.3% in the mean concentrations of Cu, Cr, and As, respectively. It is worth mentioning the occurrence of the fungus Xylaria sp. after treatment 6 (60 min, 5 g, and 25 V), further suggesting that the method was effective. Samples of these fungi were identified from isolates by culture in medium, DNA extraction, and sequencing of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region.

RESUMO Estudos que abordam os parâmetros tecnológicos da madeira de amplo uso, como Eucalyptus grandis, são fundamentais, uma vez que seu uso e exploração adequados dependem dessas características. Atualmente, o implante dessa espécie foi ampliado e o espaçamento é um fator determinante. Portanto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o espaçamento das plantas e a variação radial na flexão estática da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis. Para a condução do experimento, foram amostradas seis árvores para cada espaçamento: 2,0 x 1,0 m, 3,0 x 1,0 e 0 x 1,5 m, totalizando 18 indivíduos aos sete anos de idade. Posteriormente, o primeiro registro de cada amostra foi seccionado em placas radiais e depois transformado em corpos de prova, identificados em intervalos regulares na direção da casca da medula, com dimensões de 2,5 x 2,5 x 41,0 cm, para realizar o teste de flexão estática mecânica, seguindo as recomendações da ASTM D-143. Os resultados da resistência mecânica mostraram uma variação na direção da casca da medula, onde os maiores valores de Módulo de Elasticidade (MOE), Módulo de Ruptura (MOR) e Tensão do Limite Proporcional (TPL) estavam próximos da casca. No entanto, o espaçamento não alterou o MOE, MOR e TLP do material submetido à flexão estática. Assim, apenas a posição radial influencia na qualidade da madeira. Os valores das propriedades mecânicas estudadas tiveram um aumento no sentido medula-casca, sendo mais acentuados na região próxima a casca.

ABSTRACT Studies that approach the technological parameters of wood with wide use, such as Eucalyptus grandis, are fundamental, since their suitable use and exploitation are dependent on these characteristics. Currently, this species implantation has been expanded and the spacing is a determining factor. Therefore, the aim of present study was to evaluate the plant spacing and radial variation in static bending of Eucalyptus grandis wood. For the experiment conduction, six trees were sampled for each spacing: 2.0 x 1.0 m, 3.0 x 1.0 m and 3.0 x 1.5 m, totalizing 18 specimen at seven years old. Subsequently, the first log of each sample was sectioned into radial boards and then made into test specimens, which were identified at regular intervals in the pith-bark direction, with dimensions of 2.5 x 2.5 x 41.0 cm, to perform the mechanical static bending test, following the ASTM recommendations. The mechanical resistance results showed a variation in the pith-bark direction, where the highest MOE, MOR and TPL values were near to the bark. However, the spacing did not change the modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and tension on proportional limit of the material subjected to static bending. Thus, only the radial position influences in the wood quality. The values of the studied mechanical properties had an increase in the pith-bark direction, being more accentuated in the region near the bark.

RESUMO O cultivo de espécies nativas e exóticas consorciadas em um sistema agroflorestal eleva o interesse de informações das propriedades da madeira. Portanto, diferentes métodos estão sendo testados com o objetivo de melhorar as propriedades tecnológicas desse material, incluindo a secagem, que provoca alterações nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira. O presente trabalho investigou a influência da secagem nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira de espécies arbóreas cultivadas em um sistema agroflorestal. Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan, Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub., Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill × Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake (híbrido) e Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) S.F.Blake foram as espécies selecionadas para o estudo. Três indivíduos de 9 anos de cada uma das espécies foram obtidos em um sistema agroflorestal. Trinta amostras de madeira (2,5 x 2,5 x 41 cm) foram extraídas de cada espécie. As amostras de madeira foram divididas entre tratamentos de temperatura. Para cada tratamento térmico foram utilizadas 6 amostras (controle, 120, 150, 180 e 210 ° C), as quais foram secas por duas horas em estufa (com circulação forçada de ar). Após o tratamento térmico, as propriedades mecânicas das amostras de madeira foram avaliadas através de testes para determinar; os módulos de elasticidade e ruptura, tensão no limite proporcional e força máxima de acordo com a norma ASTM D-143-94 (2000). Por fim, as propriedades físicas de retratibilidade das amostras de madeira foram avaliadas de acordo com a norma NBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997). Os corpos de prova utilizados para analisar essa variável foram provenientes de seções da madeira (dimensões da amostra: 2,5 × 2,5 × 5 cm) não afetadas pelo teste de flexão estática. Os resultados indicam que, para todas as espécies investigadas para o estudo, a secagem altera as propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira, com as alterações mais significativas ocorrendo a temperaturas entre 120 e 180 ° C.

ABSTRACT The cultivation of native and exotic species intercropped in an agroforestry system raises the interest for information on the properties of wood. Therefore, different methods are being tested to improve the technological properties of this material, including drying, which causes changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the wood. The present study investigated the influence of drying on the physical and mechanical properties of wood from tree species grown in an agroforestry system. Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan, Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub., Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill × Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake (hybrid), and Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) S.F.Blake were the species selected for the study. Three 9-year-old individuals of each of the species were obtained from an agroforestry system. Thirty wood samples (2.5 × 2.5 × 41 cm) were extracted from each species. The wood samples were divided between temperature treatments; 6 samples were used for each heat treatment (control, 120, 150, 180, and 210 °C), which were then dried for two hours in an oven (with forced air circulation). Following the heat treatment, the mechanical properties of wood samples were evaluated to determine the modulus of elasticity and rupture, the tension in the proportional limit, and maximum force according to the ASTM D-143-94 (2000) standard. Finally, the physical properties of the retractability of the wood samples were evaluated according to the NBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997) standard. Specimens used to analyze this variable came from sections of the wood (sample dimensions: 2.5 × 2.5 × 5 cm) not affected by the static bending test. Our findings indicate that, for all species investigated in this study, drying alters the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, with the most significant changes occurring at temperatures between 120 and 180 °C.

RESUMO O bambu é um material utilizado em escala global em diversas áreas. Contudo, necessita de aprimoramento nos processos para utilização industrial, no Brasil. A produção de painéis laminados colados está em crescimento no mundo e pode ser uma fonte de recursos para esse fim. Objetivou-se avaliar as propriedades físico-mecânicas de painéis laminados de bambu produzidos com duas espécies (Phyllostachys aurea e Dendrocalamus asper) e dois processos produtivos/adesivos (laminado colado e termomecânico). Para as análises mecânicas, corpos de prova retirados dos painéis foram submetidos a ensaios de cisalhamento, dureza Janka e flexão estática. Os mesmos corpos foram utilizados para a determinação da massa específica aparente, teor de umidade e grau de compressão. A massa específica aparente variou entre 0,75 g cm-3 e 0,79 g cm-3, com teor de umidade de equilíbrio entre 7,83 % e 10,42 %. Os maiores valores das propriedades mecânicas foram verificados no bambu laminado termomecânico. Para D. asper, o módulo de ruptura foi de 146,8 MPa, a resistência ao cisalhamento na linha de cola de 6,36 MPa e a dureza Janka atingiu 3.852 N, enquanto, para P. aurea, constatou-se 19.603 MPa no valor do módulo de elasticidade. Concluiu-se que a produção de painéis laminados de bambu, em especial no processo termomecânico, é uma potencial alternativa.

ABSTRACT Bamboo is a material used on a global scale in several areas. However, it needs adaptation in the processes for industrial use, in Brazil. The production of glued laminated panels has been growing in the world and this material can be a source of resources for this purpose. This study aimed to evaluate the physical-mechanical properties of laminated bamboo panels produced with two species (Phyllostachys aurea and Dendrocalamus asper) and two production processes/adhesives (glued-laminated bamboo and thermo-mechanical laminated bamboo). For the mechanical properties analysis, specimens removed from the panels were subjected to shear tests, Janka hardness and static bending. The same specimens were used to determine the apparent density, moisture content and degree of compression. The apparent density varied between 0.75 g cm-3 and 0.79 g cm-3, with equilibrium moisture contents between 7.83 % and 10.42 %. The highest values for the mechanical properties were verified in the thermo-mechanical laminated process. For D. asper, the modulus of rupture was 146.8 MPa, the shear glued line 6.36 MPa and the Janka hardness 3,852 N, while, for P. aurea, the modulus of elasticity reached 19,603 MPa. It was concluded that the production of bamboo laminated panels, especially using the thermo-mechanical process, can be a potential alternative.

RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as dimensões das fibras e a idade de transição entre lenho juvenil e adulto da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis. Para tanto, foram amostradas, com base no diâmetro dominante de Assmann, quatro árvores de um povoamento experimental situado próximo ao litoral do Rio Grande do Sul com 18 anos de idade. Após o abate, no disco correspondente à região do DAP (diâmetro à altura do peito) foram marcadas e seccionadas baguetas centrais das quais se confeccionaram fragmentos selecionados em intervalos regulares, no sentido medula-casca, para maceração e, posteriormente, determinação do comprimento, do diâmetro total, do diâmetro do lume e da espessura da parede das fibras com auxílio de um microscópio ótico com ocular graduada. A segregação dos dois tipos de lenho foi determinada pela variação radial do comprimento das fibras utilizando regressões lineares múltiplas e simples; e a idade de transição por meio de regressões lineares simples. Os menores valores referentes às dimensões de comprimento, de diâmetro total e da espessura da parede das fibras foram observados próximo à medula, com tendência crescente em direção à casca, sugerindo a existência de diferenças entre os lenhos próximo da medula e da casca. Entretanto, esse padrão não foi observado para o diâmetro do lume das fibras o qual evidenciou um aumento até a posição central do raio seguido de diminuição até a porção mais externa. A zona de transição entre lenho juvenil e adulto foi estabelecida entre as idades de 4,2 e 4,7 até 8,1 e 9,1 anos, sendo denominada de faixa de lenho juvenil aquela correspondente até 4,2 e 4,7 anos; e de lenho adulto superior a 8,1 e 9,1 anos. Já a transição entre o lenho juvenil e adulto ocorreu a 10 cm da medula, ou seja, na idade de, aproximadamente, 6,1 anos. A definição da idade em que ocorre a transição entre os lenhos juvenil e adulto facilita os processos de transformação da madeira uma vez que a porção juvenil constitui um obstáculo à viabilização do seu uso industrial.

ABSTRACT This study was undertaken to evaluate the fiber dimensions and the transition age between juvenile and mature wood of Eucalyptus grandis. It was selected, based on the Assmann’s dominant diameter, four trees of an experimental stand located in the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul state, with 18 years of age. After cutting down, in the disk corresponding to the region of the DBH (diameter at breast height) were marked and sectioned central baguettes, where crafted fragments were selected at regular intervals in pith-to-bark direction for maceration and, thereafter, determination of the length, the total diameter, the lume diameter and the wall thickness of the fibers with the aid of an optical microscope with a graduated eyepiece. The segregation of both types of wood was determined by the radial variation of the fiber length and using simple and multiple linear regressions; and a transitional age through simple linear regression. The lower values for the dimensions of length, total diameter and wall thickness of the fibers were observed near the pith, with an increasing trend toward the bark, suggesting the existence of differences between wood near the pith and the bark. However, this standard was not observed in the lume diameter of the fibers, which showed an increase to the middle position of the radius followed by a decrease to the outer portion. The transition zone between juvenile and mature wood has been established between the ages of 4.2 and 4.7 up to 8.1 and 9.1 years, range termed juvenile wood that corresponding to 4.2 and 4.7 years; and adult wood exceeding 8.1 and 9.1 years. The transition between adult and juvenile wood occurred at 10 cm from the pith, that is, in the age of about 6.1 years. The definition of the age at which the transition between the juvenile and mature wood occurs facilitates the wood transformation processes once the juvenile portion constitutes an obstacle to the viability of its industrial use.

ABSTRACT High toxicity of the preservatives most frequently used in wood treatment and the resulting risks of handling pose a threat to small producers and to the environment. In an attempt to mitigate these problems, the present study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the preservative effect of tannic extract on biodeterioration of Acacia mearnsii wood. For this purpose, untreated and preserved specimens, some with tannin extract and some with a preservative mixture based on CCB (Chromated Copper Borate), were submitted to accelerated rotting trials with the fungus that causes white rot (Pycnoporus sanguineus) for 16 weeks. The evaluations were made with a basis on weight loss and chemical components analysis, and they showed that the natural resistance of Acacia wood is moderate when exposed to the white rot fungus. The tannin concentrations showed similar effects to those of the CBB mixture in all evaluations, i.e., they significantly increased the biological resistance of the material, which started to be classified as very resistant to the fungus. Overall, the results suggest that tannin can be considered as a potential natural preservative product.

RESUMO: O estudo das características da madeira é de fundamental importância para o correto uso dessa matéria-prima e, dentre as suas propriedades, a massa específica é uma das principais, por ser referência na qualidade desse material. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a variação axial da massa específica básica da madeira de Araucaria angustifolia (Bertoloni) O. Kuntze, em diferentes classes de diâmetros. Para isso, três árvores foram selecionadas em seis classes diamétricas, denominadas de classe 1(20-30cm), classe 2 (30,1-40cm), classe 3 (40,1-50cm), classe 4 (50,1-60cm), classe 5 (60,1-70cm) e classe 6 (70,1-80cm). De cada indivíduo amostrado, foi retirado um disco a 0,1m (base), 25, 50, 75 e 100% da altura do primeiro galho vivo e no diâmetro a 1,30m do solo (DAP), que foram utilizados para a determinação da massa específica básica. O valor médio ponderado da massa específica básica foi igual a 0,422g cm-3 e, independentemente da classe diamétrica analisada, essa propriedade decresceu no sentido axial. O diâmetro induziu a variação da massa específica básica, porém não foi verificada uma tendência sistemática positiva ou negativa em relação ao intervalo amostrado.

ABSTRACT: The study of the wood characteristics is of fundamental importance for the correct use of this raw material and, among its properties, the basic density is a major, being reference in the quality of this material. This study aimed to evaluate the axial variation of basic density of the wood of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertoloni) O. Kuntze in different diameter classes. For this, three trees were selected in six diameter classes, called class 1 (20-30cm), class 2 (30.1-40cm), class 3 (40.1-50cm), class 4 (50.1-60cm), class 5 (60.1-70cm) and class 6 (70.1-80cm). From each individual sampled was withdrawn a disc at 0.1m (base), 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the height of the first live branch and in the diameter at 1.30m from the ground (DBH), which were used for determining basic density. The weighted average basic density was equal to 0.422g cm-3 and, regardless of the diameter class analyzed, this property decreased in the axial direction. Diameter induced variation of basic density, but has not been verified a positive or negative systematic tendency in relation to the sampled interval.

RESUMO Esse trabalho teve como objetivo determinar o efeito da idade e do espaçamento de plantio nas propriedades energéticas de diferentes compartimentos da biomassa de Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, distribuída em diferentes espaçamentos: 2,0x1,0 m, 2,0x1,5 m, 3,0x1,0 m e 3,0x1,5 m, no 1º, 3º e 5º ano após o plantio. O presente trabalho foi realizado em um experimento instalado em delineamento experimental de blocos completos casualizados em três repetições. Foram determinadas as variáveis biomassa (BIO), poder calorífico superior (PCS), massa específica básica (ME), produtividade energética (PE), densidade energética (DE), teor de carbono fixo (CF), teor de material volátil (MV) e teor de cinzas (CZ). As idades proporcionam um efeito em todas as variáveis analisadas, sendo que no 5º ano após o plantio, são verificados os maiores valores de BIO, PE, ME, DE e CF. Os espaçamentos de plantio induzem a diferentes produções de BIO e PE, com uma tendência de redução dos valores com o aumento do espaçamento de plantio, em todos os períodos avaliados. Os compartimentos das árvores influenciam nas variáveis BIO, PCS, PE, CF, MV e CZ. Do ponto de vista energético, quanto maior a idade e menor o espaçamento de plantio, melhores são as propriedades energéticas da biomassa.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the effect of planting age and spacing on energy properties of different compartments of the biomass of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, disseminated in different spacings: 2.0 x 1.0 m, 2.0 x 1.5 m, 3.0 x 1.0 m e 3.0 x 1.5 m, in the 1st, 3rd and 5th year after the planting. The present study was carried out as an experiment installed in an experimental design of randomized complete blocks in three replications. Variables determined were Biomass (BIO), Gross Calorific Value (GCV), Basic Density (BD), Energy Productivity (EP), Energy Density (ED), Fixed Carbon Content (FCC), Volatile Material Content (VMC), and Ash Content (AC). Ages have an effect on all studied variables, and in the 5th year after planting, the largest BIO, EP, BD, ED and FCC values are checked. The planting spacings induce different productions of BIO and EP, with a trend towards lower values with increasing planting spacing in all assessed periods. The compartments of trees influence BIO, GCV, FCC, VMC and AC variables. Regarding to energy, the higher the age and lower the planting spacing, the better the energy properties of biomass.

This study aimed to determine the energy productivity of the different compartments of above ground biomass of forest species: Acacia mearnsiiDe Wild, Eucalyptus grandisW. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrellaBenth and Ateleia glaziovianaBaill distributed in different spacing in planting: 2.0x1.0m, 2.0x1.5m, 3.0x1.0m and 3.0x1.5m, at ages of 1 and 3 years. The study was conducted in an experiment in the city of Frederico Westphalen-RS, in experimental design of randomized complete block with three replications. The determination of the energy productivity was carried out through the measurement of values of above ground biomass and power calorific value of each compartment. The different planting spacings induced different yields of biomass energy, and it was found a systematic negative trend in relation to the living space provided by lower planting space. The energy productivity achieved in the third year for all species, were higher than those of the first year. The speciesEucalyptus grandispresented the greatest potential for energy productivity of wood and for the other species, equivalent to twice the Acacia mearnsii, the denser spacing (2.0x1.0m)

Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar o poder calorífico superior (PCS) das árvores e a massa específica básica ponderada (ρb pond) da madeira de Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth e Ateleia glazioviana Baill distribuídas em diferentes espaçamentos em plantio: 2,0 x 1,0 m; 2,0 x 1,5 m; 3,0 x 1,0 m; e 3,0 x 1,5 m, nas idades de 1 e 3 anos. O estudo foi conduzido em um experimento localizado no Município de Frederico Westphalen, RS, em delineamento experimental de blocos completos casualizados com três repetições, no esquema de parcelas subdivididas. A determinação do PCS das árvores foi realizada a partir da ponderação dos valores obtidos em cada compartimento (madeira, casca, galho e folha), por meio de bomba calorimétrica. A determinação da ρb pond foi realizada a partir da ponderação dos valores verificados dos discos coletados em diferentes posições ao longo do tronco, usando-se o método da balança hidrostática e massa seca. O PCS de todas as espécies no primeiro ano após o plantio foi superior ao do terceiro ano, destacando-se a Acacia mearnsii com as maiores médias. A ρb pond não apresentou tendência sistemática de aumento ou redução ao longo do tempo e as espécies Acacia mearnsii e Ateleia glazioviana, os maiores valores. Os diferentes espaçamentos de plantio não induziram a variação do PCS e da ρb pond nas espécies estudadas, não sendo verificada tendência sistemática positiva ou negativa em relação ao espaço vital proporcionado pelo espaçamento.

This study aimed to determine the higher heating value (PCS) of trees and basic density weighted (ρb pond) of wood of Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Ateleia glazioviana Baill distributed in different spacings in planting: 2.0 x 1.0 m, 2.0 x 1.5 m, 3.0 x 1.0 m and 3.0 x 1.5 m, at ages of 1 and 3 years. The study was conducted in an experiment in the city of Frederico Westphalen, State of RS, in experimental design of randomized complete block design with three replications in a split plots. The determination of the PCS of the trees was made from the weighting of the values obtained in each compartment (wood, bark, twig and leaf) using calorimeter bomb. The determination of ρb pond was performed from the weighting of the values recorded on discs collected at different positions along the stem, using the method of hydrostatic balance and dry mass. The PCS of all species in the first year after planting was higher than the third year, highlighting the Acacia mearnsii with the highest averages. The ρb pond had no systematic trend of increase or decrease over time, and the species Acacia mearnsii and Ateleia glazioviana showed the highest values. The different planting spacings did not induce the change in PCS and ρb pond in the species studied and it was not verified a positive or negative systematic trend in relation to the living space provided by the spacing.

A massa específica básica (MEb) é um dos principais parâmetros das propriedades da madeira. Considerando isso, este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a variação longitudinal da MEb da madeira de Cordia americana (Linnaeus) Gottshling & J.E. Mill e de Alchornea triplinervia (Sprengel) Müller Argoviensis. As árvores foram selecionadas em um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Decidual Aluvial, em Iraí-RS, que, após o abate, foram medidas e cubadas pelo método de Smalian. Para a determinação da MEb, foram retirados discos nas posições da base, 25, 50, 75 e 100% da altura comercial e no diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP), 1,30 m do solo. Os resultados indicaram que a MEb da madeira de Alchornea triplinervia (S.) apresentou padrão homogêneo no sentido longitudinal do fuste; diferentemente da variação encontrada para Cordia americana (L.), em que os maiores valores dessa característica foram observados na base, com tendência decrescente até o topo das árvores.

The specific gravity (MEb) is one of the main parameters of wood properties. Considering that, this study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal variation of the basic density of the wood of Cordia americana (Linnaeus) Gottshling & J.E. Mill and Alchornea triplinervia (Sprengel) Müller Argoviensis. The trees were selected in a fragment of subtropical semideciduals forest (local name Floresta Estacional Decidual), in Iraí-RS, Brazil that, after logging, were measured and scaled by the method of Smalian. To examine the wood density, discs were collected with about two centimeters at positions base, 1.3 m (DBH), 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the height along de stem. Two wedges being withdrawn symmetrical and opposite, which was obtained green volume, wood saturated and dry weight in an oven at 103C (±2°C). Alchornea triplinervia (S.) showed homogeneous wood density in the longitudinal direction of the stem, and Cordia americana (L.) had decreased wood density towards base-top.

A madeira juvenil em maior proporção no fuste e suas características físicas, mecânicas, químicas e anatômicas diminuem a qualidade do material. Esse estudo teve como objetivo estimar a idade de segregação do lenho juvenil e adulto pelo comprimento dos traqueoides em Pinus elliottii Engel, aos 30 anos de idade. Para tanto, seis árvores foram selecionadas, com base no diâmetro dominante, em um povoamento localizado no Colégio Agrícola de Frederico Westphalen/UFSM. Após o abate, no disco correspondente a 0,15 metros de altura, foram marcadas e seccionadas baguetas centrais de onde se retirou o lenho inicial dos trinta anéis de crescimento, no sentido medula-casca, para maceração. A segregação dos dois tipos de lenhos foi determinada pela variação radial da característica anatômica em estudo através de duas regressões lineares simples. Os resultados indicaram que o comprimento dos traqueoides apresentou padrão de variação crescente no sentido medula-casca, indicando assim que os menores valores foram observados próximos à medula e correspondem aos primeiros anéis de crescimento. A idade de segregação do lenho de Pinus elliottii definida por meio do comprimento de traqueoides foi de, aproximadamente, dez anos.

The juvenile wood in greater proportion in the stem and its physical, mechanical, chemical and anatomical characteristics decrease the quality of the material. This study was undertaken to estimate the segregation age of juvenile and mature wood by tracheid length of Pinus elliottii Engel, at 30 years of age. Six trees were selected, on the basis of the dominant diameter, in a stand located in Agricultural College of Frederico Westphalen/UFSM. After cutting down, in the disk corresponding to the 0.15 meters, were marked and sectioned centrals baguettes from where was removed the initial wood of the thirty growth rings, in pith-to-bark direction, for maceration. The segregation of the two types of wood was defined by radial variation of the anatomical characteristic in study through two simple linear regressions. The results indicated that the tracheid length showed a pattern of increasing from pith to bark, indicating that the lowest values were observed near the pith and correspond to the first growth rings. The age of segregation of the Pinus elliottii wood defined by tracheid length was, approximately, ten years-old.

RESUMO O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do desbaste nas rachaduras de topo das toras de Eucalyptus grandis aos 18 anos de idade. Para tanto, foi analisado um experimento situado próximo ao litoral do Rio Grande do Sul, instalado em delineamento blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Os sete tratamentos foram definidos devido ao número de desbastes aplicados e variaram de zero até seis intervenções. As árvores foram selecionadas, em cada tratamento, com base no diâmetro dominante de Assmann e no diâmetro da árvore central, sendo denominadas de árvores dominantes e centrais, respectivamente. Após o abate foram selecionadas as toras localizadas entre as posições do DAP (diâmetro a altura do peito) e 25%; 25% e 50%; 50% e 75%; 75% e 100% da altura comercial para o estudo das rachaduras de topo. Os resultados indicaram que o índice médio de rachadura de topo das árvores dominantes e centrais foi maior na segunda tora amostrada, evidenciando que a toragem das árvores deve ser realizada em conjunto com técnicas que minimizem as tensões de crescimento, principalmente quando o seccionamento for realizado próximo à metade da altura comercial. O desbaste induziu a variação do índice médio de rachadura de topo das toras, tanto nas árvores dominantes quanto nas centrais; porém, não foi verificada uma tendência clara positiva ou negativa, podendo-se concluir que alterações na taxa de crescimento não afetaram esse parâmetro de maneira uniforme.

ABSTRACT The study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of thinning in the end splits of the logs of the Eucalyptus grandis at 18 years of age. There was analyzed a thinning experiment, located in the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, installed in randomized blocks with four repetitions. The seven treatments were defined according to the number of thinnings applied and ranged from zero to six interventions. The trees were selected, in each treatment, on the basis of the Assmann's dominant diameter and the central diameter of tree, being referred to as dominant and central trees, respectively. After cutting down the selected the logs were located between the DBH (diameter at breast height) and 25% positions, 25% and 50%; 50% and 75%; 75% and 100% of the commercial height, for the end split study. The results indicate that the average end splits of the logs in the dominant and central trees was higher at the second log sampled, suggesting that sectioning should be carried in conjunction with techniques that minimize the growth stress, especially when this is performed near the half of the commercial height. The thinning induced variation in the logs end split, both for dominant and central trees; however, there was no clear positive or negative trend, leading to the conclusion that changes in growth rate did not affect these parameters uniformly.
